A German’s point of view on IslamA man whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.”Very few people were true Nazis” he said, “but many enjoyed the return of German pride and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us and we had lost control and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.”We are told again and again by “experts” and “talking heads” that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace.Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam. The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honour kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. The hard quantifiable fact is that the “peaceful majority”, the “silent majority”, is cowed and extraneous.Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people. The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel and bayonet. And, who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were “peace loving”?History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up , because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them and the end of their world will have begun.Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghanis, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.As for us who watch it all unfold; we must pay attention to the only group that counts — the fanatics who threaten our way of life.Lastly, at the risk of offending, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand. So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world wide, read this – think about it – and send it on.

A German's point of view on Islam

A man whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.

“Very few people were true Nazis” he said, “but many enjoyed the return of German pride and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us and we had lost control and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. Very important and positive thing the author has brought out relates to the sins of ‘Silent Majority’ keeping silent. It becomes the duty of every one of us not to just complain when we find things going wrong but to stand up, oppose and be counted. It requires courage and we have to muster it if we want to enjoy the luxury of democracy. The price we have to pay is relatively small. If we loose the privilege either we or the next generation will to have pay a much heavier price. Iraqi & Burmese people have and are experiencing this truth every day. While giving such an important lesson, author has mixed up with it subtle and obvious prejudices – may not be deliberately. I give one example below. “We are told again and again by “experts” and “talking heads” that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam. The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.” To me it is meaningless to argue whether a religion is peace loving or war mongering. Meaningless because for every quotation supporting peace, another will be sighted supporting the opposite. Buddhism probably will be reckoned as the most peace loving one. Yet, Buddhist Generals ruling Burma have no qualms in killing unarmed monks. When reflecting on German view one has to take in to account the following,When Germany was defeated the active Nazis were sought and punished. Some leading lights were put to death. But the silent majority, the so called ‘Silent Nazis’ were let free. Not that they did not pay price of partition and war reparations, but they were not treated as criminals. In Africa, I think the worst killings in recent times happened in Rwanda. There Hutus were exterminating Tutsis. Islam was not involved. In Darfur too the fight is between Janjawids, Muslims and pastorals, and opposition, also Muslims but agriculturist. The fight is over resources and Sudan government is siding with the former. ( Giving conflicts tribal, religious or ideological colour in fact plays in to the hands of the fanatics or terrorists one avowedly wants to fight. We become accessory after the genocide by allowing fanatics to cloak their true intentions and assisting them to obfuscate the real issues. By believing the “War on Terror” both US citizens and rest of us are letting hide the true intention of Bush-Cheney regime to dominate the oil in Middle East. The cost of war is met from ‘Tax Dollars’ of US citizens and profits from contracts are flowing in to the coffers of private corporations controlling Armament, oil & other industries. It is Private good at public cost.) The ‘silent war mongering sadists’ in Japan probably paid the most horrific price when America carried out the LIVE testing of their New Found War TOY on Civilian targets. Not once but twice. Before all this Japan had already offered to surrender, but the information was suppressed at that time. US is the only country to have used Nuclear bomb once, and once more, but moralizes about nuclear proliferation. That the Japanese chose to forgive (forget?) US is another story. However, no silent Japanese ended up being abused as a sadist or a war monger. One can go on sighting examples, but to conclude, we must learn to distinguish between the acts of STATES ( governments) and those of their subjects. Many people accuse me of being biased against Americans or at least harsh in my criticism. But they miss the point. I do endeavour ceaselessly to make a distinction between the US State (say at present Bush-Cheney administration) and US citizens. In my article I have sighted a few individuals, mostly they are from US, to whom I owe a debt for clarifying many issues I have chosen to comment upon. I urge that the courtesy extended to “Silent Christians”, “Silent Buddhists”, “Silent Sikhs”, “Silent Jews”, “Silent Hindus”, “Silent Atheists”, etc. may also be extended to “Silent Muslims” by not confusing and not letting others to confuse between Terrorists / Fanatics and Muslims. I started this blog, hopefully only as a first step – a small first step, to break my silence. I hope to reach out to as many people as I can. I highly appreciate the trouble you have taken to send this ‘German View’ to me. It has enriched my thinking. I would love if you and your other friends write back with their views. Frankly, I appreciate when flaws in my thinking and defects of facts (I can assure you that latter will find place only through ignorance or genuine mistake) are brought to my notice. I then know someone has taken the trouble to read what has been said, understand and then for may be equally good reasons disagree. Together we can begin to make a difference. Let us not remain silent.

Hi there,From your article and the riposte to “A German’s view on Islam” it seems you are biased towards a particular religion. If you look at most of the major acts of terrorism in peace loving India, one group is common. Why?

Who are ‘real’ christians and biblecommon criticism of historic orthodox Christianity is the claim that early Christianity was corrupted by the intellectual forces of ‘Hellenism.’ (Hellenism, of course, refers to the influence of ancient Greek philosophy and culture, which spread throughout the Mediterranean world after the conquests of Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC.) Specifically, the doctrines of Trinity and the deity of Christ have been rejected as unbiblical ideas that were introduced into Christianity through the corrupting influence of Greek philosophy, particularly the ideas of Plato. As long ago as 1531, in his book, On the Errors of the Trinity, Michael Servetus criticized the ‘Hellenistic’ terms used by Trinitarian Christians to explain their understanding of God. More recently, various critics of orthodox Christianity–including Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Muslims, New Age adherents, and theological liberals–have argued that the true biblical understandings of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit were corrupted in the third, fourth, and fifth centuries by Greek philosophy and pagan polytheism, which led to the development of the doctrines of the Trinity and the deity of Christ. The following examples will document this approach:

Shah, it would be wrong to lump New Agers with Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims.Being who they are (polytheists, atheists, no theists etc), New Agers would probably find Christianity was SAVED (not corrupted) by Hellenistic influences, which pushed Christianity farther from the semitic models as best represented by Judaism and Islam.

I do read your mails, but take time to think things out and write back. This ‘problem’ of Islam and peace has been there since the very inception of that faith in the 7th century AD. Let us not forget that the Prophet himself had to wage war in Mecca to get his own kinsmen to surrender to Islam. I guess he thought he was doing the right thing, getting his Arabs to bow down to the ‘true’ faith instead of warring constantly and then going to the Ka’ba once a year to pray to a large number of stone idols in ‘peace’. That was before the Prophet made them accept only one God who could not be depicted as a statue or a painting!I am often perturbed by the way in which Hindu philosophy is being converted into a rigid ‘faith’ by the not so silent ‘protectors’ of Hinduism by making it a ‘i believe in Rama/Krishna/ whoever’ otherwise you are not a Hindu. May be it is the perceived need of the times? But then, how do the ritualistic majority not get upset when, after the ‘visarjan’ the Ganesh idols lie around because they do not disslove in the water? That is not considered to be an insult to the god?In fact one can go on endlessly about it with no concrete result on the horizon.Do keep on staying in touch. Nilakshi
