Perils of Internet: An AIIMS Professor is a Victim.

An email landed on my laptop today that warned to avoid 6 items of common usage in the interest of one’s well being, or even life. It listed 8 medicines and asserted, “They contain Phenyl- Propanol -Amide PPA.Which Causes strokes, and these tablets are banned in U.S.“. This statement had several defects. PPA is “Phenylpropanolamine”, and not “Phenyl- Propanol -Amide“. It is not a constituent of Nimulid, one of the brand name listed. Composition of Nimulid Transgel is “Each g contains : Nimesulide ……..10 mg, In a water soluble gel base Alcohol content 66% v/v“. While it is true that PPA is associated with an elevated risk of a cerebral hemorrhage, it is not banned in USA according to the website Hoax or Fact. The anti-inflammatory, anti-analgesic ingredient in Nimulid (brand name owned by Panacea Bio-tec) is Nimesulide, which is involved in Hepato/Renal failures. Even In India, Nimesulide and Phenylpropanolamine are banned; but ban extends only to Paediatric formulations, “The ministry decided last week to ban the sale, distribution and manufacture of nimesulide’s paediatric formulation along with cisapride, phenylpropanolamine, human placenta extract and sibutramine and R- sibutramine“. It is another matter the images for Nimulid paediatric formulations still populate the web.
Every Allopathic drug (or even others) would carry risks, which are normally listed under Side Effects and Conta-Indications. If people were to browse literature on the medicines that they pop-in everyday, most would be to scared to continue the treatment. Medicine-prescriptions, of whatever -pathy, have to be and are expected to be written after finely balancing the benefits and harms they are likely to cause.

At point 3 the email had this dire warning, “Don’t eat Mentos before or after drinking Coke or Pepsi coz the person will die immediately as the mixture becomes cyanide“. I like most people carried a dread of word “cyanide”, which is supposed to cause instant  or practically instant death. Even though Colas or Mentos (or some other common tablet- Aspirin) may harm health otherwise, when combined they are likely to be fatal, is another one of those “myths” floating around for years. Since I am luckily endowed with abundant -natural and learned- and healthy skepticism, I just decided to confirm doubts that arose in my mind. Was I in for a surprise? Center For Disease Control (where else but USoA) has an Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), whom one may call at 1-888-422-8737 for more information. Some startling finds: (a) Cyanide doesn’t cause instant death Exposure to high levels of cyanide harms the brain and heart, and may cause coma and death. Exposure to lower levels may result in breathing difficulties, heart pains, vomiting, blood changes, headaches, and enlargement of the thyroid gland“. (b) Cyanide occurs even naturally. “Certain bacteria, fungi, and algae can produce cyanide, and cyanide is found in a number of foods and plants. In certain plant foods, including almonds, millet sprouts, lima beans, soy, spinach, bamboo shoots, and cassava roots (which are a major source of food in tropical countries), cyanides occur naturally as part of sugars or other naturally-occurring compounds. However, the edible parts of plants that are eaten in the United States, including tapioca which is made from cassava roots, contain relatively low amounts of cyanide“.
(c) The most common source of cyanide exposure is, hold your breath, tobacco smoking. “Families can reduce their exposure to cyanide by not breathing in tobacco smoke, which is the most common source of cyanide exposure for the general population“.
Sensational and popular association of Cyanide with murders and suicide notwithstanding, humans use cyanide extensively in mining (especially Gold, 18%) and the lions share is claimed by the production of organic chemicals (80%). Hey, this bit about cyanide may be “comforting (?)”, but is Cola + Mentos = Cyanide?
It is not, but don’t rush to consume cola or mentos one after the other in any order. ^^^put a Mentos in a Coke/Pepsi or any other carbonated drink bottle, like shown in some videos, it causes the soft drinks to fizz heavily… Mentos produces rapid foam and the numerous small pores on the Mentos’ surface induce the release of cardon dioxide form the soda drink, when it comes in contact with the drink. This sudden increase in surface tension of the liquid releases the fizzing carbon dioxide of carbonated drink like a rapid explosion. But the point to be noted here is, this is NOT a chemical reaction, it is simply a physical reaction… it is also important NOT to try and experiment this Mentos eruption effect with a handful of Mentos after drinking coca cola or pepsi, like few people have done it in the past and certainly got hurt as a result of the intense reaction. If you are doing any kind of this adventure, the intense gas and foam developed inside can gush out through your mouth in a very uncomfortable way, and it might even risk your digestive system^^^.
The eMail could be still be disregarded as “safe” or “harmless” but mischievous prank, but its versions are doing the round for many years and are also available on the net. But these are needlessly vexing a head of the department at a reputed institution by dragging his name to buttress the “half-true”, “half-fantasy” and wholly mischievous claims made in it.
Please go through the followings-
and try to remember in future,

for your own safety –
1) Don’t put your mobile closer to your ears until the recipient answers,
Because directly after dialing, the mobile phone would use it’s maximum
signaling power, which is: 2watts 33dbi. Please Be Careful. Please use
left ear while using cell (mobile), because if you use the right one it
may affect brain directly. This is a true fact from Apollo medical team.
2) Do not drink APPY FIZZ . It contains cancer causing agent.
3) Don’t eat Mentos before or after drinking Coke or Pepsi coz the person
will die immediately as the mixture becomes cyanide. Please fwd to whom u
4) Don’t eat kurkure because it contains high amount of plastic if U don’t
Believe burn kurkure n u can see plastic melting. Please forward to all!!!!
News report from Times of India
5) Avoid these tablets as they are very dangerous
* D cold
* Vicks action- 500
* Coldarin
* Actified
* Co some
* Nice
* Nimulid
* Cetrizet-D
They contain Phenyl- Propanol -Amide PPA.Which Causes strokes, and these
tablets are banned in U.S.
6) Cotton Ear Buds… (Must read it) Please do not show sympathy to people
selling buds on roadside or at Signals……… Just wanted to warn you
people not to buy those packs of ear buds you get at the roadside. It’s
made from cotton that has already been used in hospitals.. They take all
the dirty, blood and pus filled cotton, wash it, bleach it and use it to
make ear buds. So, unless you want to become the first person in the world
to get Herpes Zoster Oticus (a viral infection of the inner, middle, and external ear)
of the ear and that too from a cotton bud, DON’T BUY THEM!
Please forward to all your near and dear ones….!

Why would a Professor of Anatomy and HOD from AIIMS would endorse an Apollo medical team report that prefers left ear use of cellphone over right? Is brain located only on the right side? I picked up the phone to dial the number. I thought that would be a phony or half-false number too. A man picked up and identified himself as Doctor Tara Shankar Roy. Surprised, but still determined, I asked him if he is the author of such an email/ release. He bemoaned that he has been unnecessarily spammed and this has continued over the years. I thanked him for clarifying the matter and he thanked me for checking it out with him before pressing “FORWARD” button like a good but gullible Samaritan.
PS: A true die hard skeptic may query why should she trust the links I have provided. Don’t. Check for yourself. I at least confirmed the information from at least Three sites before sticking my neck out. Tell me if I am proved wrong.
