Burgess: Fetuses Masturbate, Feel Pleasure, Feel Pain.

This is going to be one of the shortest posts ever that I wrote. I had to get the extreme loathing I experienced, when I read the news article by Katie McDonough: “GOP lawmaker: Extreme abortion ban justified because of masturbating fetuses“, out of my system immediately. The sickening depths, which lawmakers of the world’s “greatest democracy” can skim in defense of their pet and diabolic core beliefs, is legendary. The exact remarks of Representative Michael Burgess, a former Doctor (OB-GYN) were, “Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful, They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?“.
Burgess is quite obviously imputing his own *pleasure-pain experience* onto the 15 or 16 week old fetuses. That too his *pleasure* is particularly directed towards male fetuses, who he argues tend to put their hands between their legs, and without saying so much is suggesting they are *fondling* their maleness.
Burgess has of course many illustrious colleagues to nourish his peculiar psyche. Last year when Representative Todd Akin was asked if he supports abortion in case conception was a result of rape, he responded: “From what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist,“.
Earlier this year, House Bill 206, was introduced by state Rep. Cathrynn Brown, that would charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for “tampering with evidence.”, “Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime“. The *crowning glory* of the achievements of US lawmakers in the field of abortion laws is that the author of this bill is a woman.

That each one of the above leading lights happens to be a Republican is besides the point. They represent a psyche of certain sections of the society more starkly, but of patriarchy more generally that no society is really immune from. Patriarchy’s desire to continue to control women’s sexuality and reproductive functions is so overwhelming that it is completely blind to the fallacies which arise from *his* position on it. His *concern for pleasure or pain of the fetus* is totally blind to the pain or suffering of the woman who is carrying that fetus. Unluckily for women, he does not come only in the male garb as Cathryn Brown has so ably demonstrated. Sadly, US society is still held by dominant discourse around the world as the epitome of Human achievements almost in every sphere.
